Have you ever been in the midst of reading a book and just had to look at the last few pages to see how it ends?

Have you ever been at the bookstore and flipped ahead in the books you are considering, to decide which ending you would prefer to read?

Or do you consistently read the story as it is written:

Bonding with a character because of the challenges they are facing?

Cheering for them to come through it all, victoriously?

Fully experiencing all of the emotions they are feeling?

How about with your own story?

The water is rising in the midst of a storm – will the house flood?

That amazing person just asked you out – will you have a future together?

A loved one just passed away – how will you go on?

The interview you just had, seemed to go so well – will you get the job?

Layoffs are happening – If you lose your job, how will you provide?

Are you anxiously trying to look ahead trying see what the next chapter holds?

Wishing you could flip past all hard things?

Trying to make your ideal ending come true?

I ask because my story has me on the edge of something that my heart has been desiring for a very long time. As I anticipate the days ahead, I also find myself pondering the times my story has thrown me some of those unwanted plot twists. Seasons of gut wrenching experiences, drama, change or waiting…

In every case:

God used those situations to help me become softer, stronger, and wiser.

I’ve learned beyond a shadow of a doubt that He is faithful.

And when my heart’s desires have finally come, they have been so much sweeter.

I’m not just speaking for myself. This is true for people that have had their homes flooded, lost spouses and children, and jobs.

If you are in the midst of waiting, unwanted change, or struggle: Be encouraged.

And as crazy as it may sound, you can experience more peace and ultimately more joy.

Below are 3 Tips for fully experiencing your story as it unfolds:

Be thankful even in the midst of unwanted plot twists. (Seriously.) Stop and list at least three things you are thankful for. Do this as often as you need to. Multiple times in an hour, several times a day or once a day. Doing this retrains your brain to stop focusing on everything that is hard and shines a bright light on everything you’ve been blessed with.

Make a list of what you are learning. And keep adding to that list long after the struggle ends. You’ll be amazed at the clarity that comes when you are through the struggle.

Share your story with others. What did you feel? How did you react? How did you get through it? What did you learn? How have you changed? Everyone struggles with something. Your story has the power to transform your future and the lives of others.

PLEASE SHARE: What is your story teaching you?

Empowerment is one of your core values. It hangs on walls throughout your building.

You’ve hosted meetings, waved your magic empowerment wand and reminded people that they are encouraged to a take greater level of ownership in your business.

However, for the most part your employees aren’t responding.

Below are 5 reasons they aren’t taking ownership –yet!

Your words haven’t made an impact yet.

Ken Blanchard says that you must impact people’s KNOWLEDGE, before you can impact their ATTITUDE, and you must impact their ATTITUDE before their BEHAVIOR changes.

Marketing theory says that someone has to hear the same message at least 7 times before you begin to impact their knowledge.

So people need to hear your message at least 21 times before it begins to impact their knowledge, attitude and behavior. (Keeping in mind that every person is not physically or mentally present each time you say something.)

TIPS:

Activate learning for all – People have different learning styles: So intentionally involve as many senses as possible when you empower them. Use words, music, video, food, activities…

Model the behavior you wish to see. (See more in tips #5 & 6)

They don’t believe you.

Their previous work experiences have convinced them that speaking truth to power will create any combination of risks:

Their position on the team

How their boss will treat them

How secure their jobs will be

TIPS:

Share stories of times that you and each member of your leadership team had the courage to lead up, what happened, and what you learned. Emphasize how each one of them knows something that others don’t. Ideas to reduce risk and expenses, increase revenue and efficiency, improve teamwork and customer service… All help the company grow and increase job security.

(See TIPS #5 & 6 as well!)

They don’t know how.

Even if they see a huge opportunity, they may not know how to approach you. (Someone with a steady behavioral style may struggle to speak to someone with a dominant behavioral style.)

When they have the courage to approach you, and you respond favorably – they may still not know how to start their project.

TIPS:

Invest in DiSC Training and learn to identify and understand different behavior styles so you can adjust to the style of the person you are speaking to.

Learn Situational Leadership so you can provide the right balance of clear direction and support. (I am naturally supportive, and learned that when I cheered employees on that needed clear direction, I wasn’t providing the help they needed. Which confused them and stalled their ability to move to the next step. Learning to recognize what they needed most was a huge leadership step for me.)

The people you surround yourself with.

Be very aware of the words and actions of the executive team. It is not uncommon for a titled leader to nod in agreement in your presence and then undermine your desire to create an empowered culture when you are not around.

Traditionalists and new hires do this if they don’t understand the value of empowerment and if they worry about losing their power and authority.

Manipulators do this because they fear being seen for who they really are.

TIPS:

Hire wisely. If that prospective leader has great experience but can’t share how they’ve leveraged empowerment to make a greater difference in previous organizations – dig deeper. Are they opposed to empowered cultures or just lacking experience? Are they willing to share their “power” with others to become a better leader and build a more successful organization?

Don’t seal yourself off. Never allow yourself to be influenced by only one person or group of people. Stay in close contact with people at all levels of your organization. Watch and listen. (See #5 & 6 as well!)

The processes you don’t have in place.

To create a truly empowered organization you need processes in place that hold titled leaders accountable to provide clear answers to the suggestions of employees.

TIPS:

Implement a simple white paper process and teach everyone in the organization where the forms are and how to do it.

Respond consistently. Executives meet monthly to review and respond to the employee suggestions.

Yes – As much as possible let those that suggested the idea, own the project and give them a sponsor in titled leadership to help them take next steps.

More information needed – be specific about what information is needed yet and give them suggested contacts.

No – Honor their initiative, be as specific as possible about why the idea won’t work at this time, and let them know when or if they should bring this idea forward again in the future.

Celebrate!

Honor, celebrate and reward those that take the initiative to grow your company.

TIPS:

In all employee meetings

Honor those that are suggesting improvements

Celebrate the difference they are making

Reward their contributions.

Imagine being a new Office Manager for a small company. The first day on the job your new boss, a.k.a the owner, meets you at the office. He stays there for the morning and then leaves.

The other employees work afternoons and weekends. So you’re in a new role, in a new industry. You’re alone at the office, answering phones, and trying to create a weekend work schedule for people you have never met, with less than 4 hours of “training.”

Logic says that you should not be surprised when that first busy weekend goes south. But your new boss loses it!

He’s in his mid forties, tall, long legged and thin. Now his string bean legs are stomping around the office, while he is hollering, blaming and yes – he even throws a pen across the room in frustration. (Not at you – thankfully!) But wow! Just wow!

If his behavior weren’t so immature and shocking – you would have doubled over in laughter at how crazy he looked!

In the heat of the moment you could decide that you have no desire to work for this Boss Baby. And you could walk out the door, put in your notice, begin updating your resume…

Or you could make some uncommon choices:

Grit up and speak truth with grace: Speaking softly but firmly, remind him that the jobs that are going south right now won’t be saved by yelling and blaming. And start exploring options to save those jobs.

Take the HEAT: Call disappointed and angry customers. (Before they call you.) Listen carefully and let them know that you Hear them, and Empathize with them. Apologize and explain that you will Take action, and explain what you will do to prevent this issue in the future. (Clients saved.)

Unleash common sense and develop the organization: Meet with the new boss and the employees to get a clearer understanding of the logistical challenges, and the strengths and weaknesses of each team member.

Train, build, monitor and continuously improve: Train employees and create processes to make their jobs easier and more efficient. Put procedures in place that improve communication with customers and monitor ongoing opportunities for improvement.

The rest of the story…

This Office Manager began to understand that the boss really wanted to be the vision guy that came up with ideas, made investments and then stepped aside to let others run the company.

The “toddler” began to grow: By staying calm, speaking truth and creating strong supportive processes for the employees and the customers – the Office Manager created an environment that helped the inner child in her boss grow up.

Employees and customers were happier and less stressed: As they consistently received clear direction and stronger support.

The Office Manager reaped what she had sown: Each year, as the company grew, her value increased. And she was frequently surprised with raises and additional benefits.

Your turn:

How do you handle temper tantrums at the office?

How has a titled leader’s poor behavior impacted employees, customers and results?

What happened to that titled leader, their employees and their customers?

In business, families, faith-based organizations and communities I’ve continuously witnessed the power of these words:

Together WE STAND. Divided WE FALL.

Prior to moving to Saudi Arabia, my focus on divisive current events was growing. …As was my determination to find ways to bring people together to find solutions.

So I began sharing this dream with others:

In Saudi, my neighbors were from more than 50 nations. In living rooms and coffee shops we began to move from surface level conversations to in depth discussions. Which ultimately led to the creation of Conversation Safari’s. Attendees courageously engaged in deep discussions with people from culturally and historically opposing perspectives. And left feeling accepted, listened to, intellectually stimulated, energized, and hopeful.

Since returning to America the divides in our nation are being emphasized so often that we rarely hear anything positive. As a result, I often hear people expressing their concern about the division and their lack of hope for our future.

If you are feeling a lack of hope, this post is to encourage you.

I do have hope because more and more people are turning difficult topics into productive discussions. Besides those women in Saudi, my friends and family here, and the groups I’ve been speaking to since my return – Below are a few recent examples of people that are making this a priority:

Friends with polar opposite political views and what they did about it
If you can’t see this video in your RSS reader or email, then click here.

How a move from a red state to a blue state challenged comfort zones and perceptions

Activists on opposing sides – That made an uncommon choice and realized that what they have in common is greater than what separates them.
If you can’t see this video in your RSS reader or email, then click here.

A group that seeks to do something similar to a Conversation Safari over dinner.

Now it’s up to you.

You can fret and worry about where our world is headed

Or you can be the change you’d like to see

…So how have you been responding? Are you:

Denying that this conflict is impacting real lives, workplaces and communities?

Pushing your perspective on others?

Sitting in silence and worrying about it?

Studying the issues, and then carrying your candle into the darkness, determined to be a part of the solution?

Sit with those you don’t understand or agree with and listen. Use your ears and your heart, honoring the experiences that are driving their emotions.

How old are they?

Deeply consider current events and historical facts.

As you review current publications – Are you reading and considering all sides to a story? Are you mindful of specific examples throughout history – where evil people manipulated violence and death to spin the narrative and control the outcome? Do you identify false news – especially when it is saying what you want to believe or are you being manipulated?

If you are struggling with hate speech – Have you ever considered why we have freedom of speech? How do you use your freedom of speech? Do you know what it is like to live where speaking what you believe is restricted? Have you studied what has happened in countries where this freedom has been taken away? Can you separate hateful speech from hateful acts?

When preserving history is important to you – Will you review how history has been preserved in your community? Is the whole story being told about the imperfect humans from different races that shaped our country? …Or are there better ways to do this?

Don’t be surprised if you learn something that softens your heart, or alters your thinking. Slightly or significantly. You are growing.

Sometimes I started on an uninformed fence, and ended up with an informed opinion.

Other times, I started in one place, and ended in another.

And in other situations, my heart has softened greatly toward those that hold a different opinion, even though my mind still holds many of my original views.

If you decide to continue reading below, I will share where this issue has taken me.

My objective is NOT for you to agree with me. Instead I want to:

Emphasize the importance of leveraging our uncommon freedom – to listen, think, speak, collaborate, learn and problem solve.

Spotlight the wisdom that comes from strategically balancing the use of both your heart and your brain when these issues arise.

I’d love to hear from you as you work this process: Where did you start? What are you learning? How are you sharing those learning’s with others?

When New Orleans considered removing Confederate statues:

I thought of the way the Nazis controlled what people learned – so that they could manipulate what people thought and how they would respond. As a result, my immediate reaction was that we can’t learn from erased and sanitized history – therefore it would be dangerous and unwise to remove statues.

MY HISTORICAL FILTERS:

I was raised in a state that is 90% white and although I was not surrounded by diversity, I was taught to love my neighbor as myself.

As a child I raged about slavery and racism – but viewed it all as historical. Almost as if someone had waved a magic wand and suddenly racism disappeared. (Not at all logical, but what my heart wanted to believe.)

SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND and CHOOSING COMPASSION:

As an adult I moved to a southern state, and new friends helped me understand that when they were children it was illegal for them to:

Use a toilet or to drink from a fountain for white people

Eat in particular restaurants and limited seating in other restaurants

Attend school with white children

Marry a white person

Vote

LEARNING: My friends have scars from years of their lives – living what I have only imagined.

A few years later I moved to another southern state and discovered that one of my black friends was afraid to go to a neighboring city in the daylight because the KKK is still terrorizing people there. A few weeks later, a white friend shared that when he moved to the area from another state that he had invited black friends to his home and the KKK warned him not to do it again.

LEARNING: Some of my friends are still living – what I have only imagined.

Most recently, I spent 4 years living overseas. During that time I lived near and worked with people from more than 50 nations in our world. And deeply treasured our conversations, sharing food, traditions, and learning about each other.

Although most of my experiences were filled with great love and are deeply cherished, I consistently witnessed people from one nation bullying and manipulating people from multiple nations, races and religions. In each of those moments, I was faced with the choice to believe that every single person from that nation is evil, or to look for the good. I chose the latter. At first I was only able to count 5% of the people I knew from that nation as compassionate, caring and trustworthy. With focused effort that percentage increased to 25%.

LEARNING: If the majority the interactions I had with people of a particular race, nationality or uniform throughout my entire lifetime were negative – Could I still make the hard choice to continue to look for the ones that aren’t like that? Or would I be even a little bit tempted to make the easy assumption that all of them are bad?

THINKING CRITICALLY:

As I explored all sides of this issue I was greatly influenced by a speech given by Mitch Landrieu, the Mayor of New Orleans about why he was removing the statues. It is important to note that I didn’t expect Mitch’s speech to impact my thinking. I thought he would offer some lame excuse for removing the statues. But his logic resonated. This is some of what he said…

New Orleans is truly a city of many nations, a melting pot, a bubbling caldron of many cultures. There is no other place quite like it in the world that so eloquently exemplifies the uniquely American motto: e pluribus unum — out of many we are one. But there are also other truths about our city that we must confront. New Orleans was America’s largest slave market: a port where hundreds of thousands of souls were bought, sold and shipped up the Mississippi River to lives of forced labor of misery of rape, of torture. America was the place where nearly 4000 of our fellow citizens were lynched, 540 alone in Louisiana; where the courts enshrined ‘separate but equal’; where Freedom riders coming to New Orleans were beaten to a bloody pulp. So when people say to me that the monuments in question are history, well what I just described is real history as well, and it is the searing truth.

And it immediately begs the questions, why there are no slave ship monuments, no prominent markers on public land to remember the lynchings or the slave blocks; nothing to remember this long chapter of our lives; the pain, the sacrifice, the shame… all of it happening on the soil of New Orleans. So for those self-appointed defenders of history and the monuments, they are eerily silent on what amounts to this historical malfeasance, a lie by omission. There is a difference between remembrance of history and reverence of it.

For America and New Orleans, it has been a long, winding road, marked by great tragedy and great triumph. But we cannot be afraid of our truth. As President George W. Bush said at the dedication ceremony for the National Museum of African American History & Culture, “A great nation does not hide its history. It faces its flaws and corrects them.

…Consider these monuments from the perspective of an African American mother or father trying to explain to their fifth grade daughter who Robert E. Lee is and why he stands atop of our beautiful city. Can you do it? Can you look into that young girl’s eyes and convince her that Robert E. Lee is there to encourage her? Do you think she will feel inspired and hopeful by that story? Do these monuments help her see a future with limitless potential? Have you ever thought that if her potential is limited, yours and mine are too? We all know the answer to these very simple questions. When you look into this child’s eyes is the moment when the searing truth comes into focus for us.”

As I pondered his comments, I thought about Holocaust Museums that include the star that every Jew had to wear and Nazi uniforms, flags, and propaganda that helped Hitler promote his agenda. None of it is sanitized, but it is placed in context so we can all learn from it without honoring evil.

Further reading uncovered additional perspectives that have provided more food for thought:

Thomas Tappan Thompson the designer of the Confederate flag wrote several editorials about his design, “As a people, we are fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause.”

General Robert E.
CHOOSING MY RESPONSE:

People matter: Red, yellow, black or white. ALL are created by God and precious in His sight. ALL are my neighbors. And ALL make our world richer. Racism and hate don’t belong our multi-cultural country or in our world. So I will stand against it will every cell in my body.

The whole truth matters: There is a way to tell the story of strategic minds, and people who fought causes that they believed were honorable – while emphasizing that it is a failed caused, and that the oppression of others is evil. That story gets richer and more valuable when we are equally devoted to sharing the stories of those that were oppressed, those that fought for freedom, and how all cultures and races impacted our nation.

We can do better.

We’ve been back in the U.S. for nearly 6 weeks. Watching the divide we witnessed across the ocean. Aching as it appears to be growing deeper and wider.

I know I’m not alone in my concern for our country or in my desire to be a part of the solution. Several of my leadership connections have been sharing both struggles and wisdom in their blogs.

Alli Polin, Erin Schreyer, Steve Keating and Jesse Lyn Stoner have each written important articles to help us build bridges across that divide.

Each of the image quotes below highlight something from their articles that I found especially powerful.

Each of their original articles are linked after each image through their name.

If you are struggling with the current state of our union – I encourage you to:

Read each one

Watch the Conversation Safari video at the end of this post

And then make strategic choices to be the change you want to see

Months and months of waiting…

In September – We knew we were moving back across the ocean to the land we call home

In October – The move was stopped and from morning to night and from day to day, what we were doing and when we were doing it changed, as things changed within the company

In early November – we were moving again and it looked impossible not to be home for Christmas

Then week after week and weekend after weekend – through Thanksgiving, and Christmas, our Anniversary and New Years we would do what we could do and then wait – on the company, the movers, the government and Harley Davidson

11 days ago – all of our household things were loaded into a container for overseas shipment

7 days ago – our motorcycle was crated and taken to our container

It’s almost mid-January and we’re still waiting – for paperwork to clear so we can leave

The emotional roller coaster has been intense:

Sad to go – So many tearful goodbyes – not knowing if or when we will see many of our friends and neighbors again

Sad to stay – Missing so much at home that we thought we would be a part of this year

Frustrated with all the barriers – There is so much we don’t control

Impatience, questions, anger, tears and numbness have all been a part of the process…

A neighbor recently commented that she doesn’t know how I’m still smiling. Another friend commented on my patience.

The reality I that most days I can smile because I do the 9 things I recommend below, but I’m also human and I have bad days too.

Christmas Eve is my favorite day of the year, and it’s been 4 years since I’ve been able to celebrate it in the way that I’d like to. (When I know we aren’t going home and set my expectations accordingly and I can navigate that day very well.)

This year I was so sure that we would be there, that I struggled to adjust those expectations as the date approached. When I woke up on Christmas Eve, I cried and dried my eyes and tried to focus on something else and the tears came again. …Over and over, for half the day, that process repeated itself. That’s not normal for me, and it wasn’t how I had imagined spending the day. But I got it all out and I am smiling again.

Need help dealing with your waiting?

Be thankful: Intentionally look for blessings and thank God for them.

Pray: It’s ok if some of your prayers are confidently claiming scripture, while others are filled with gut wrenching questions, and others are peaceful and accepting.

Turn up the volume on your favorite tunes: And listen to beautiful melodies and lyrics filled with truth an inspiration.

Be authentic with your friends: Their understanding and support will help to carry you with new perspectives, advice, encouragement, prayers, distractions, laughter and if you’re as spoiled as we’ve been – maybe even meals!

Get some exercise and fresh air: Just getting out and walking changes the scenery and gets your blood pumping.

Look back and remember: Other big seasons of waiting and change that were really tough that caused you to emerge softer, and stronger and wiser.

Dream about the future: Who do you want to connect with, what do you want to do… What can you do now to prepare for that?

Keep others that are waiting in your thoughts, prayers and messages: Who do you know that is in a season of waiting? How can you support them?

So many of our friends and family are waiting for things that are bigger and harder than what we are dealing with.

Friends all over Louisiana that had their homes flooded in August and are still waiting to get back home. …Many are staying with friends, some with family, some in FEMA trailers.

They’ve waited:

On flood waters to recede

On insurance companies for estimates

On banks to clear insurance checks

On construction crews to be available and to get started

While they’ve waited: They’ve lacked privacy, and lost personal freedoms as they’ve adjusted to life in the homes of others.

Other friends have waited for:

Medical testing

Then waited for test results

Some are now waiting for treatment to start while others are waiting for treatment plans to work.

They wait for vacations – Often waiting months and years past the promised date.

When there is a family emergency back home they wait for approval to leave – and often don’t receive it. (So they often miss the births and weddings of their children, miss helping family after a natural disaster, miss visiting a loved one in a hospital, miss saying goodbye to and burying parents when they die.)

Our topic had been planned for months based on several private conversations:

I’d had with a Muslim neighbor

And several different conversations I’d had with ladies that will always have a better tan than I do

In each of those private conversations we shared fears, we felt each other’s pain, and considered new perspectives.

(The date of our event had been chosen because of some scheduling conflicts, not because of a master strategy. But when November 9th rolled around and the election results from the U.S. hit the airwaves – fear in across the world and in the expat sandbox grew. Our topic could not have been more perfectly timed.)

One of the women I had met with during the summer shared what was happening at the University that her son attends in the U.S.

Other neighbors were posting deep concern for their safety in the world

While other friends in the U.S. were sharing deep concerns about racism and bigotry

The morning of the event, each lady that attended agreed to:

Share what makes them feel angry and fearful – beyond the election

Be courageous and open, even if they were uncomfortable

Bring compassion, curiosity and a spirit of adventure – instead of a desire to win a debate

After sharing what made each one angry and fearful… I had been given permission to share the following story from one of those private conversations…

A brlliant, compassionate and beautiful African woman is in an environment where she is often treated as less because of the color of her skin. One day a neighbor called her a Negro – to her face. The pain that word caused, still shines in her eyes when she shares the details of that event.

Once the ladies in the room had a few minutes to process her pain, we compared that to another true story…

A white woman that is in her late 60’s was raised in a very rural part of the U.S.. It was so rural that she was 20 years old before she saw a person of color in real life.

Because of her environment and age, this woman used the word Negro as recently as two years ago, as a descriptive term. (Much like people use the words Caucasian or Hispanic, tall or short – not understanding how much pain it can cause.)

-This white woman cares about her brothers and sisters, regardless of their skin color and wants to understand at a higher level. But she is unsure how to connect.

Not long ago, she and her husband visited the Southern part of the U.S. and took a tour of slave history. They were the only white people on the tour. She was heartbroken by what she saw and disappointed that more white people weren’t there, and even more disappointed about how awkward and uncomfortable it was. She didn’t know how to express her desire to learn, and the rest of the people on the tour were more than a little suspicious of her presence.

No matter which side of the story we relate to, how do we really know:

When someone’s intent is malicious?

If they don’t know what they don’t know?

Or if they just aren’t sure how to express their compassion and desire to learn?

Then we discussed a TED Talk about a Muslim woman who lived in the U.S on Sept 11, 2001. All day long, she experienced great fear about being blamed and persecuted for something that others did. Instead of her worst fears coming true, she received amazing care and support from her community.

And we compared her experience that day to:

The experience of one of the Muslim ladies in the room – Who was living Australia far away from her home country of Pakistan for the first time. Navigating a new culture on her own, far from her father and her husband. She was treated badly that day – not because she did anything wrong, but because some people were fearing all Muslims, based on the actions of a few.

My experience – Living in the 4th largest city in the U.S and not knowing one Muslim. Not one. The day the planes hit, I was on a business trip in a different state. So my focus was on the safety and security of our country and my loved ones, supporting the co-workers I was with, and getting home to my husband. …And it never occurred to me to wonder what innocent Muslims were experiencing.

After meeting with one of my Muslim neighbors this summer – she shared this video with me.

It emphasizes the temptations we all face in the midst of divisive and terrifying issues

And recommends an uncommon solution – that each one of us can act on immediately

As fear-filled news swirls around us, and the world trys to convince us that we have to choose a side… We can choose to:

Stay in our comfort zones and continually dwell on our anger and fear

Talk endlessly to people who are angry and fearful of the same things we are – which only increase the size of our monsters

Sit in judgment of those who don’t side with us

OR

Stop feeding the anger and fear in our thoughts and our conversations

Leave our comfort zones and seek to understand those have different stories and perspectives

Share what we are learning with others

One choice fuels despair, the other fuels hope.

*An important mention: In one of our Safari’s I was asked if it was ok to say “white people” to describe my race. It was an instant bonding moment for the entire room as we recognized how challenging and uncomfortable it is to have these conversations. Imagine asking someone about a physical or cognitive challenge, or how to properly describe someone’s race, nationality or religion… There are very few words that all people agree on. If we all understand that – it is easier to offer each other grace and keep learning!

Your boss allowed you to express opposing ideas without fear: Yes – you disagreed a lot, both passionately and emphatically, but never disrespectfully. In spite of holding wildly opposing views– you were always allowed to speak your truth even if it was the opposite of what your boss was thinking. And he of course, always shared his opinions.
