I’ve had the privilege of participating in one of Chery’s programs recently. I was awestruck by the unique ability she possesses to successfully facilitate in-depth discussions within groups of strangers from culturally and historically opposing viewpoints. Chery is a great facilitator, communicator, listener, instructor, counselor and mentor with a passion for truth and real problem solving!Jaynia Samaroo
Chery went above and beyond for us and our students. Her presentation captivated our students and teachers.  (While sharing personal experiences and current information about life in Saudi Arabia, she emphasized critical life skills. Which motivated them to consider the limits of their comfort zones, think critically, solve problems and recognize the humanity of others.)  Chery is a pleasure to work with and  a great facilitator. I give her my highest endorsement.Kevin Hoherz

Chery Gegelman is someone whose very fiber exists to exceed the expectations of every stakeholder and always deliver a quality experience. She has made an immense difference, always giving more than she takes. L.S. and R.W.
I had the pleasure of observing Chery facilitate a planning session for a local government entity in the fall of 2012. I was immediately impressed by the combination of clear direction and explanation, confidence and gentle humor with which she guided a room of power players. Her questions were insightful and enabled this group of diverse individuals to bring their best thinking and dialogue to bear on the issues before them.

Following this event, we contracted Chery to facilitate a discussion on the topic of innovation with one of our key clients. Again, she was spot on, giving life to an agenda that could have, in less skilled hands, fallen flat. Rob Benson
Lead Consultant, Learning Unlimited Corporation

I have been fortunate to attend Chery’s events, where she has unreservedly welcomed all forms of opinions. She has brought people of different mindsets and encouraged them to admit their deepest fears and apprehensions.  At the end, they have all left feeling inspired, energized and loved. Her patience, her empathy, her desire for truth and her noble intention to help people become compassionate human beings, are important elements which are direly needed in today’s world that portrays the darkness of fear and intolerance. With her comes the sunshine of peace and tolerance in much abundance.Tanya Badami

I attended Chery’s daylong Freedom retreat on bridging communications with people who are culturally different from you. She is an excellent facilitator with thought provoking questions that challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and think differently about your pre-conceived ideas of the world. I loved her positive attitude, candor and humor in presenting humanity in a Christ-like way that motivates and inspires people to conquer their fears and reach out with confidence to help people of all nationalities. Chery’s respect for the individual, her calm approach, wisdom, ability to provide solutions and passion for continuous improvement is inspiring. Chery has a remarkable ability to connect with people, motivate and inspire them. My daughter attended one of Chery’s workshops for teenagers which was very beneficial in helping her set goals and work toward achieving them. Thanks Chery for offering your encouragement and inspiration wherever it is needed.Susan Turner

I met you several years ago when I was teaching at _____. We heard several speakers in the 11-1/2 years before my retirement last year. Almost all of them felt contrived and a waste of time.

Not yours. Your talks and encouragement left a lasting impact on me. I always felt your sincere, honest and heartfelt desire to help us work as a team and strive to do our best in that fractured environment. C.C.

Reaffirmed that there is a need for change, no matter the current culture in your workplace and that change can evolve given the right tools. Tony Rivera

I have had the opportunity to work with Chery Gegelman for a number of years now, as an associate and more recently as a client. I continue to be impressed with her ability to form and lead a team or project and with her ability to maintain her strong values along the way.  She can see maximum potential in a project when very few others can and executes. Whether it is refining existing business practices or creating something entirely new she has the drive and experience to make things happen.  She is responsible for the origination and development of some of our most successful initiatives, many of which have become an important part of our daily operation. Chery’s ability to read people and to read a situation is clearly exceptional and it is obvious to me that her success stems in large part from these strengths, time and time again. Faced with a new opportunity or a need to refine and existing one, Chery would be my first choice to make things happen.D.K.

She truly cares and is committed to improving the organization. David E. Oliver

Many of the projects Chery has been involved in required multiple departments with agendas that were not always aligned to work together. In those situations I always saw Chery work diligently to bring the different members of the team together. Making sure to include everyone’s point of view to ensure a collaborative outcome, and speaking up for the soft-spoken if need be to make sure that everyone’s viewpoint is expressed. R.M.

Learning to Leverage Your Strengths

...That often show up as a weakness

Have you ever struggled to figure out how to leverage a strength that is coming across as a weakness?

If you’ve ever watched popcorn pop, you’ll understand one of mine.

One little kernel heats up, flies into the air and explodes into light fluffy happiness. POP!

Then a couple more kernels join the fun! POP! POP!

Then a few more! POP! POP! POP! POP! POP!

Soon the party is in full swing, as the noise, chaos, and joy increase rapidly! POP! Pop! POP! Pop! POP! POP!!! POP!!!!

That’s me and…My popcorn brain

For many years I sat in meetings:

  • Excited by the challenge of problem solving.
  • Fueled by the opportunity to be creative and to collaborate.

And frustrated because I could not clearly articulate what was happening inside my brain.

DEEP Understanding Drives Change

Several years ago I sat in a room full of volunteers that were being trained to go into schools and work with children that were at risk of dropping out. One of our exercises was a simulation that was designed to help us better understand the day-to-day realities for their families.

  • We were divided up into small groups.
  • Each one of us was given a role to play.
  • Then we were given a real life problem that needed to be solved.
  • And a name of a place we needed to go to for help.

In the simulation I was the small child of a single mother that had no car.

  • “My mother” needed food and a job and childcare.

The simulation was timed to help us understand everything that she needed to accomplish in one day – just to bring home food. (Let alone finding a job or daycare.)

Each time we got off the simulated bus, we walked into a facility and stood in a long line. To eventually be re-directed to another place for services that was across town with different operating hours and another long line.

My job was to simulate how a child begins to act as a few hours becomes a day without food, without a nap, without play.

Uncommon and EXTRAordinary Agents of CHANGE

Prior to moving to the foreign land I now live in, I read about expat wives.

  • I read about their maids and their drivers.
  • I read about how they filled their time with shopping and the spa and expensive vacations.
  • I read about women that became alcoholics or drug addicts from boredom.

Wow what a picture!  …Expat wives sounded spoiled, pampered, snooty, lonely and sad.

  • I didn’t read anything that highlighted their brilliance, their ability to adapt to change or how critical their role is in providing stability for their husband and children.
  • I didn’t read anything that highlighted the variety of situations they have had to navigate and how they were tested or how they grew stronger.
  • I didn’t read about their wisdom, their compassion or their grit.

But oddly enough every contact I made with experienced expats prior to my move was positive.  Complete strangers offered advice, encouragement, pictures, stories, recon, support, and hope.

In my first week here we had dinner with another couple that has moved 9 times in 12 years to 6 different countries.  Prior to becoming expats her background was in HR.  Immediately I thought of how often HR and hiring mangers frown on hiring people that have been out of the workplace for any period of time.  And then I thought about:

  • How often executives and hiring managers have told me that the biggest challenge to growing their organization is people.  AND how often I’ve watched those same people pass up great candidates because they aren’t mining for towering strengths in uncommon packages.
  • How many organizations are in the midst of change and struggling.
  • How Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman taught me to mine for, develop and unleash strengths in people.   …And how those lessons helped to transform an under-performing group of individuals into a high performing team that exceeded all of their goals and lead multiple company-wide organizational development projects.

So today I’m launching a new series about “The Real Housewives of Expat Men!”

Have you ever been Pickled by a Half-Truth?

My mother is a great storyteller.  As I was growing up, there was one story in particular that I loved to hear her tell, especially if she told it to someone who had never heard it before ~ because before the story ended the people listening would usually be doubled over in laughter with tears running down their faces.  (With her permission I am sharing that story with you…)

When I was two and my sister was a baby, my dad was just out of the military, and my parents were re-inventing our lives in their home state. Dad had a new job and mom wanted to start a garden and can vegetables to contribute to the family.

It was during a time when stores were selling more convenience foods, and gardening and canning were not popular, so it was difficult to find the supplies needed to can. So my great aunt offered to give several old canning jars to my mother if she would be willing to dispose of the old pickles in the jars.

My mother was thrilled and agreed.

When she got the jars home she wondered what to do with the old pickles.

  • No garbage disposal.
  • No plastic garbage bags.
  • Perhaps she should flush them?  (After all they were about the same size as other items that are typically flushed…)

So she did…

Open a jar.  Dump.  Flush.

That seemed to work

Open another jar.  Dump.  Flush.

And another.  Dump.  Flush.
